Why don't people respect me at work even though I do good work?

Because respect and recognition of work quality are formed from different mechanisms. If the signal reads lower than the work, the respect doesn't follow.

Can you earn respect without being aggressive or dominant?

Why does a less competent colleague get more respect than me?
